When Kelly Barber of Bevis Funeral Home was told she would excel in funeral services after taking a career aptitude test in high school, she was not surprised.

“The reason is because I had an interest in people.”

She started her journey to becoming a funeral director after attending Florida State University.

“I tried other career paths, and couldn’t find the right fit. When I was in my early 20s, and I was a student at FSU, I just wasn’t happy with my major,” she said. “Someone arranged for me to have a meeting with a funeral director. Then I started working in a funeral home and from that very first day I knew that’s what I needed to do. I started mortuary school within a month of graduating.”

Kelly, who is originally from Havana and continues to reside there with her husband, son, 16, and daughter, 14, believes that listening and having a passion for helping people are the most important aspects of being a funeral director.

“First and foremost, you have to be a good listener. You need to enjoy meeting people and helping them, and be compassionate,” she said. “I need to listen to the families I meet. I need to have a good knowledge of what options are out there. Everybody is different.”

Kelly’s deep knowledge for the funeral industry is cemented in years of experience; she first began working with Rocky Bevis 19 years ago.

“We’re all about our families, and one thing that sets us apart from any other funeral home is Mr. Bevis,” she said. “He grew up in this town, and he will always stop what he’s doing to come speak to a family. He knows eight out of 10 families that come in.”

Kelly’s responsibilities are considerable, ranging from meeting with families who have had a death and planning the funeral to diligently seeing that family’s arrangements through.

When asked about the most rewarding part of her job, Kelly immediately notes the families she has worked with throughout the years. “The most rewarding is when a family sends me an email or a thank you for helping them through the process. It says I’ve done my job. I can’t change their circumstances, but my job is to get them through this part. When they give me a thank you that says I’ve done that, I know that I have made a difference.”

At home, Kelly’s house is filled with family and friends — and a lot of pets. A bearded dragon, red-foot tortoise, shih-tzu pup, and parrot named Coby round out the household. When not at work, Kelly enjoys watching her daughter’s gymnastics meets and spending time with her husband and children.
